One of the world leaders in Biofuels, BP has a focused biofuels strategy, investing in the production of ethanol from sugarcane in Brazil, cellulosic feedstocks such as dedicated energy grasses in the US, and the development of the advanced fuel molecule biobutanol
In addition to their sugar-cane ethanol business in Brazil, they are investing in exciting new technologies that will convert sugars into advanced biofuels. These have higher yields from less land, improved fuel performance and minimal impact on food supplies.
Working with DSM, BP has engineered a new microorganism that produces a synthetic bio-oil from the sugars extracted from plants, which is then upgraded and tailored to meet a variety of diesel applications. The main advantages of sugar-to-diesel technology include reducing exposure to fluctuations in the price of vegetable oil and producing biodiesel that has exactly the same structure as regular diesel.
