Waste Vegetable Oil

Waste Vegetable Oil (WVO) is considered a second generation biofuel due to the fact that its utility as a food has been expended. Using it for fuel is actually improves its overall environmental impact. It has been used as a fuel for more than a century and some of the earliest diesel engines ran exclusively on vegetable oil. Disadvantages of WVO:

  • If improperly refined, can decrease engine life

  • Hard to collect, as it is distributed throughout the world in homes and restaurants

Advantages of WVO :

  • Readily available

  • Easy to convert to biodiesel

  • Low in sulfur

  • Does not threaten the food chain

  • No associated land use changes
